As I stepped off the rickety bus at the serene shores of Palolem Beach, the salty breeze tousled my hair, greeting me like an old friend. The sun, a molten ball of amber, bathed the sky in warm hues, promising days filled with freedom and liberation from my everyday Mumbai hustle. I was here for a week-long yoga retreat, but the trip was more than just downward dogs; it was a chance to reconnect with myself amidst the whispers of palm trees and the rhythmic whoosh of waves.

The Anticipation: A Mindful Packing List

Imagine laying out everything you think you might need for a week, each item a piece of an emotional puzzle. My packing list began as a practical exercise but quickly transformed into a heartfelt meditation on what this journey meant to me. The vibrant green yoga mat? Check. It’s seen my vulnerable moments and ecstatic flows. I can’t imagine practicing without it.

Next up, the clothes—light, breathable fabrics that felt like a second skin. A couple of flowy dresses for those spontaneous beach dinners and a few tank tops to layer over my comfy yoga leggings. Packing for a yoga retreat is an art of its own; I wanted to be ready for beach bonfires, sun salutations at dawn, and luscious meals with friends both old and new.

Ah, and let’s not forget my journal. I never travel without it. It’s my confidant where I pour my thoughts, deepening my connection to the liberation I seek in my experiences. Every word I write holds a piece of my truth, and I knew Goa would offer me a bounty of inspiration to uncover.

Arriving in Goa: A Circle of Kindred Spirits

As I settled into my beach hut, painted in hues of ochre and turquoise, the retreat began to unfurl like a flower. Our group was a diverse tapestry—women from across the globe, each seeking their own form of freedom. On the first evening, we gathered for a welcome dinner at a quaint seaside shack called Xavier’s Beach Cafe (at the end of Tito’s lane). The laughter of strangers mingled with the sounds of the crashing waves as we shared stories over creamy coconut curries and spicy prawn vindaloo.

There’s magic in shared meals, the way conversations flow like the gentle tide, revealing our truths one delicious bite at a time. I remember bonding with a fellow yogi named Leena, a solo traveler from New Zealand. We laughed as she spoke about her mishap of accidentally ordering a fish head at a local market! A small reminder that when we’re truly exploring, freedom often comes with a side of unpredictability.

Awakenings on the Mat: Yoga with a View

The next morning dawned, and I woke early, eager to experience the sunrise yoga session. It was liberating to watch the day break over the horizon, casting golden reflections on the calm waters. I rolled out my mat on the soft, white sands, the ocean whispering sweet nothings to my soul. Each breath on the mat transported me deeper within myself.

While I won’t claim to be a yoga expert, I can share that the gentle guided practice curated by our instructor, Rani, was transformative. She had this way of speaking that calmed my restless mind—the kind of voice that invited serenity and stillness into the chaotic corners of my thoughts.

Rani encouraged us to embrace the poses that challenged us, both physically and emotionally. It was during a particularly difficult stretch that I had an epiphany. I sensed the tension in my body and the self-doubt creeping in, as if whispering, ‘You can’t hold this pose’. But in that moment, amidst the chorus of crashing waves, I surrendered—it was liberating. I realized that the struggle was part of the journey. Liberation is not found in avoiding discomfort but in embracing it.

Discovering Goa: Beyond the Retreat

Throughout the week, I embraced spontaneity. One afternoon, after our practice, I joined some of the other women for a spontaneous trip to a rainbow-colored spice plantation. Walking through lush greenery, I learned about spices that felt almost mythic—turmeric that sparkled like gold, and cardamom that filled the air with sweetness. We inhaled the raw essence of life and savored organic coconut drink served straight from the shell. Each taste transported me further into the heart and soul of Goa, which, like the spices, is a rich blend of diverse cultures, flavors, and stories.

After our plantation adventure, we headed into the city for a taste of local dessert. I knew I had to try the famous bebinca, a layered Goan dessert as rich as the coconut milk from which it’s made. At an unassuming café named Mum’s Kitchen, the owner shared with us tales of Goan tradition while we savored every velvety layer. It felt like indulging in pieces of his heritage, the sweet flavors lingering on my tongue while joy bubbled in my heart.

Unplanned Detours: Unexpected Discoveries

One evening, eager for some exploration, I wandered into a local market in search of traditional clothing. Amongst the vibrant stalls adorned with colorful fabrics, I caught sight of an elderly woman hand-weaving beautiful saris. Her hands moved deftly, crafting intricate patterns as she hummed a familiar tune. I felt an irresistible urge to sit with her. We began to converse. Despite the language barrier, our laughter and shared smiles spoke volumes.

She taught me the art of weaving, sharing stories about her family and the history of her craft. Every thread was a testament to her life, connecting generations through tradition. I walked away with a light heart and a handwoven scarf gift, a beautiful reminder of the freedom of connection and the liberation of shared experiences.

Getting Cozy with Comfort: Evening Reflections

As each day melted into night, I found solace in evening reflections at our retreat—a circle wrapped in the warmth of candles and camaraderie. With blankets draped over our shoulders, we shared the fears we shed and the dreams we dare to nurture. Some confessed the terrifying leap of traveling solo, others spoke of breaking free from societal expectations. I listened, soaking in the empowerment that echoed through our words, each story stirring something deeper within me.

A Warm Send-Off: Ending on a High Note

On our last evening, we gathered for a farewell dinner at an eco-friendly eatery, Thalassa, perched on a cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea. The atmosphere was electric, and as we feasted on delectable mezze and sizzling seafood dishes, a sense of camaraderie enveloped us. As the sun dipped below the ocean horizon, painting the sky with fiery oranges and soft violets, we toasted to freedom—to our shared journeys, to our fears that we conquered as a troop, and to the bonds that formed like the roots of an ancient banyan tree.

Finding My Way Back Home

As I packed my bags for the journey home, I felt different; lighter, somehow. This week of exploration taught me that the essence of travel lies not only in visiting new places but in crafting spaces within ourselves where we can breathe, grow, and transform. I wouldn’t trade the laughter, the struggles, or those exquisite moments of connection for anything else.

Returning to Mumbai was bittersweet. In my heart, still rested the laughter of sisterhood, each sound an affirmation of liberation and the freedom to be just as I am. And as I write this from my little home office, blurry-eyed from the last remnants of travel, I realize that the real magic lies in trusting that every journey—be it physical or spiritual—leads me closer to the person I’m meant to become. So, with this in mind, I pack for my next adventure, eager to unfold the world anew.
