How a Missed Train Turned into the Best Layover in Singapore: Travel Hacks, Poolside Perks & Kaya Toast Dreams

0

Picture this: you’ve just sprinted off the airport express in Singapore, backpack bouncing, only to watch your city-bound train pull away in a blur. Classic travel chaos, right? But instead of crumbling in defeat, I flipped the script. I had eight hours to kill before Bali, and I was determined to turn a missed connection into a mini adventure.

Making the Most of a Singapore Layover

Singapore’s Changi Airport is a destination in itself, but if you’ve got a few hours, venture beyond the terminals. After a quick baggage claim dash, I hopped on the MRT (download the Google Maps and Grab apps to save time navigating!). A few stops later, I’d landed in the heart of the city and was already chasing the scent of something sweet.

The Brunch that Changed My Mood (and My Feed)

Enter: Chatterbox. This little pastel-toned café dished up an experience that was part brunch, part aesthetic therapy. I ordered the iconic kaya toast – toasted perfection slathered with coconut jam and butter, paired with a gooey soft-boiled egg and piping hot kopi. Pro tip: Always ask locals (or friendly café staff) what their faves are – they’ll rarely steer you wrong.

*Update
I couldn’t get enough of the Kaya so I’ve been making this great recipe for Hainanese Kaya Toast from Adam Liaw, an Aussie / Chinese chef. Also, yes, I took photos. Lots of them. Because if a brunch isn’t posted to the ‘gram, did it even happen?

Affordable Luxury: Yes, It Exists

Next stop? A cheeky splash of luxury. I found a one-night deal at Hotel Indigo, rooftop pool included, for under $100 AUD. Poolside lounging with a cocktail in hand and zero guilt? Yes please. Travel hack: score these deals by browsing booking apps at odd hours or just before check-in time — you’d be surprised what pops up and how much you save.

This quick hotel detour gave me that bougie buzz without blowing my budget. Even if you’re on a shoestring, treating yourself to a fancy night now and then makes the whole trip feel extra special.

The Art of the Carry-On: Mastering Minimalist Packing

Let’s talk packing. My entire Bali trip fit into a carry-on (shoutout to packing cubes and pure stubbornness). Capsule wardrobe essentials were the MVPs: breezy dresses, mix-and-match tops, and sandals that scream “beach babe by day, casual goddess by night.”

Want to look cute without carting your entire wardrobe? Layers, my friend. A scarf can double as a blanket, sarong, or dinner outfit upgrade. And roll everything. Seriously, you’ll thank me.

From Layover to Beach Life in Bali

A few hours later, I touched down in Bali and checked into a tiny private guesthouse in Semanyak so dreamy it felt illegal at the price. Private pool, short walk to the beach, and under $100 AUD? I’m still recovering from how good it was.

I joined a local surf class (where I did in fact both faceplant – twice and ride a wave — balance!) and ended the day at Sea Circus, a bright fun circus themed restaurant with awesome food and staff. Think fish tacos and a Margarita that whispered to my soul.

Protip: Book ahead for dinner. Like REALLY ahead.

Spice Mishaps and Unexpected Friendships

Cue chaos: Next night on my way out after a gorgeous day on the beach and starting to feel like I’m in my spiritual home – and possibly a few too many ice cold Bintang, I tried one of the many street food stalls after being drawn in by the incredible aromas of chicken and lemon grass. I ordered Ayam Betutu, chicken marinated in a blend of spices like lemongrass, shallots, turmeric and chilli that came with a fresh sambal.

Well I was ravenous and dived into that meal with gusto, shovelling great heaps of sambal and chicken into my mouth until after a few minutes my mouth started flashing warning signs and my brain caught up.
OMG……. I severely underestimated that sambal and overestimated my spice tolerance.
I ended up gulping water and literally sobbing while the “kindly” old lady that served me had tears in her eyes too – from laughing so hard. But hey, it sparked a hilarious convo with fellow travelers who witnessed the meltdown. The “Sambal Saga” became our shared joke and led to a whole night of rooftop laughs together.

That’s the thing about travel — the slip-ups become stories, and the awkward moments often birth the best memories.

5 Travel Hacks for Layovers That Don’t Suck

  1. Always pack a swimsuit – you never know when a rooftop pool opportunity will strike.
  2. Use hotel booking apps last-minute – some of the best deals drop just hours before check-in.
  3. Bring a foldable tote – great for quick grocery hauls or beach runs.
  4. Learn a few local phrases – even “thank you” gets big smiles.
  5. Stay flexible – the best experiences often come from detours, not checklists.

Why Every Woman Needs a Little Solo Chaos

If you’ve ever hesitated to travel solo because of the “what ifs,” here’s your sign to go anyway. What if you miss a train? You might find the best kaya toast in town. What if your bag’s too full? You’ll learn to live with less and love it. What if you order some crazy spicy food? Well… you’ll have a killer story and maybe a new crew to share it with.

This whole adventure reminded me that travel isn’t about perfect planning. It’s about showing up — sweaty, lost, curious — and saying yes anyway. And maybe, just maybe, letting a missed train set the stage for something unforgettable.
